β-Mercaptoethanol is also known as 2-mercaptoethanol, thioethanol, thioethylene glycol, etc., and its English abbreviations are ME, 2-Me or β-ME. β-Mercaptoethanol has the functional groups of ethylene glycol (HOCH2CH2OH) and ethanedithiol (HSCH2CH2SH), and plays an important role in cell growth.
